In response, the pituitary gland secretes adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) into the bloodstream. ACTH signals the adrenal glands, located atop the kidneys, to release cortisol.

Once released into the body, cortisol, a steroid hormone, has a wide array of functions, highlighting its importance in managing both stress and various physiological processes. Its primary role in metabolic regulation involves elevating blood glucose levels through gluconeogenesis in the liver. This process is crucial during stress as it ensures a steady supply of energy to essential organs and muscles by mobilizing fatty acids from adipose tissue.
